What is Substack and why is it the future?

By Women in Journalism Scotland
Online event
Mar 25, 2025 to Mar 25, 2025
Overview

Join Sam Baker, Fiona Gibson and Lucy Sweet to find out how they use Substack and why it's such a great platform for building a brand.

Substack is the blogging platform where journalists, writers and anyone else produces a regular - or irregular - newsletter. This lands straight into their subscribers' inbox.

The writer can choose whether to charge or not. Some have made Substack into a substantial income stream while others use it as a shop window or just a place to have a moan.

It's the platform of choice for many writers who want a space for their own voice, independent news outlets and useful news aggregators such as The Glasgow Wrap and The Edinburgh Minute.

Whether you are a hardened stacker or a still-to-sign-upper, this workshop will answer your questions, illuminate different approaches to using Substack and hopefully give you ideas and inspirations to get you started.

Panel members Sam Baker (The Shift), Lucy Sweet (The Lucyverse) and Fiona Gibson (All Grown Up) will talk through their different approaches to using the platform and what's in it for them. Chair Anna Burnside (The Hairy Eyeball) will ask the questions.
