Whose House: Bridgegate area - A Short Walk

Chester Castle: Agricola Tower and Castle WallsChester, England

Overview

Who once lived in Chester's historic buildings? Find out on this short city centre walk around the Bridgegate area.

Ever wondered who once lived in Chester's old buildings? This short walking tour around the Bridgegate area reveals how the city's historic sites and buildings have changed in ownership, appearance and use over time.

Led by volunteer guide Maria Owen, the walk explores how up until the 18th century it was common practice for premises to serve as both working and living quarters — and how some streets gradually became more genteel, with wealthier residents closing off their sections of the Rows to create grander townhouses, or demolishing older properties entirely to build anew. Many of these buildings are still standing today, now repurposed as shops, bars, cafes and offices.

But this tour tells the stories of all who made their home here — from writers, teachers, clergy and mayors to innkeepers, tradesmen, working people and, rather famously, John Lennon's Gran. The full sweep of Chester life is written into these streets. Come and discover who was behind the doors.

Meeting Point: Chester Castle Car Park by Propylaeum Gateway, Grosvenor Street, Chester, CH1 2DN
