Culture+Conflict is a not-for-profit agency focusing on art produced in, or in response to, conflict and post-conflict situations across the world.Our overall aims are to increase the involvement of the arts in conflict and post-conflict situations, to build greater understanding of their value, and to foster the exchange of knowledge and perspectives with other sectors also engaged in conflict and post-conflict work: the political and diplomatic community, NGOs, international development agencies, academia, the media, and the many peace-building initiatives worldwide. We believe the arts have a vital role to play, not least in their unique ability to communicate the powerful personal and political issues of conflict.

Abu Eisheh will talk about his practice and especially his current research at the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives and the Foyle Special Collections Library. This relates to British colonial history in the region, the foundation of Israel and how these have impacted on Palestinian identity. <A HREF="http://www.mariamghani.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">MARIAM GHANI</A> is an artist, filmmaker, and writer from Afghanistan based in New York. She has collaborated with artist Chitra Ganesh since 2004 on the 'Index of the Disappeared', an experimental archive of post-9/11 detentions, deportations, renditions and redactions. Her long-term research and film project, ‘What We Left  Unfinished’, examines the lost or fragmented film history of Afghanistan. The project relates to Ghani’s family roots in Afghanistan and her interest in reconstructing failed ideals. The event will be chaired by <A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/teachingfellows/deorellana.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. PABLO de O</A><A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/teachingfellows/deorellana.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RELLANA</A>, Teaching Fellow in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, whose research interests include nationalism, diplomacy and identity politics.  The Weston Room, where this event is held, currently houses <A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/archivespec/exhibitions/maughan.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Revolution!</A>, an exhibition to mark the centenary of the Russian Revolution and to explore the concept of revolution more broadly.   This event has been programmed by Culture+Conflict and is presented in partnership with <A HREF="http://www.kingscollections.org/catalogues/lhcma" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">King’s College Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives</A>, <A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/archivespec/special-collections/access.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">the </A><A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/archivespec/special-collections/access.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Foyle Special Collections Library</A><A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/library/archivespec/special-collections/access.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">,</A> and <A HREF="http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/index.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Department of War Studies</A>.   Both the event and the residencies described below are generously supported by the <A HREF="http://www.johnsonstiftung.ch/en/index.php" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation</A> and <A HREF="http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arts Council England</A>.  _____________________________________________________________________________ Culture+Conflict Artist Residencies  Culture+Conflict’s intent in establishing an artist residency programme is to bring fresh insights to material held in archives by artists whose heritage is not British, especially in relation to the history of war, conflict and colonialism. We believe there is the potential for new engagement with historical narratives through the involvement of art and artists, and the prospect of a degree of re-interpretation and the raising of new questions.  Bisan Abu Eisheh has been commissioned by Culture+Conflict to undertake the first of two artist research residencies at, and in a partnership with, the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives and extending to the Foyle Special Collections Library. Together they contain hundreds of thousands of printed works, maps, sound recordings,  photographs, manuscripts and archival material, which have been built up by purchase, gift and bequest, with many unique and illuminating items. The archivists have a deep knowledge of this material, providing significant guidance and support as Abu Eisheh navigates the extensive amount of information stored. 
Bisan Abu Eisheh, born in Jerusalem in 1985, is a Palestinian artist living and working between Jerusalem and Glasgow. His aesthetic is loaded with elements, facts and topics, and his own personal history. These variously lead the viewer into a consideration of aspects of Palestine’s history including national identity and national biases, mobility, migration and injustice, the ramifications of border drawing, and of how land itself is affected. Through his research there comes an entanglement with the present. Can something of what has been lost or overwritten be brought back to life? 
Founded in 1964, the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College London covers a range of military history topics from the late nineteenth century onwards. The archive holds many types of material: diaries, correspondence, working papers and files, texts of lectures, memoranda, unpublished memoirs, audio and video tapes of events and recollections, transcripts of interviews, photographs, maps and plans, and press cuttings. The Foyle Special Collections Library includes the historical library collection of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), comprising 80,000 items spanning 500 years of world history, of particular relevance to the current research residency.
