'Wi Deh Yah' - ﻿Visual Communication Design (session 2)

Wi Deh Yah is a series of talks organised in collaboration with the Design History Society and the Caribbean Fashion and Design Research Network (CFDRN) which was established in October 2022 by a group of researchers whose research interests intersect in a variety of ways across the Caribbean region. CFDRN was established with the aim of amplifying the voices and histories of the Caribbean, a region which remains under-represented in histories of design. The Caribbean is defined in its broadest sense to include the islands in the Caribbean Sea and/or those countries that share its coastline.﻿﻿﻿The second session in the series Visual Communication Design focuses on Caribbean visual culture. The session will delve into the intricate dynamics of visuality, emphasising the significance of what is seen, who has access and the complex interplay between seeing, knowledge, and power. This talk features three compelling presentations that shed light on diverse facets of the Caribbean visuality and design; challenging visual communication education, the implications of the black aesthetic in Swiss design, challenging the biases of the graphic design field and the unearthing of Windrush visual narratives. He has been practising landscape architecture since 1988 apprenticing in California, Hawaii, Italy and Barbados before establishing Talma Mill Studios Ltd. in 1990 as a leading Caribbean landscape architectural firm. Since its inception, the firm Talma Mill Studios Ltd. has been at the forefront of developing Caribbean landscape architecture with a global relevance. The firm has experience in all aspects of landscape design, urban design, environmental, development and tourism planning. Talma Mill Studios has been involved many of the civic space developments in Bridgetown Barbados including Constitution River, Jubilee Gardens, Independence Square, Church Village Green and Golden Square Freedom ParkNatasha Henry is the founder of a digital humanities project called Black Cover Archive (bCArchive), an independent collection of creative global magazines. She is a PhD Researcher + GTA in Media, Communications and Sociology at the University of Leicester. Her PhD research examines the production of fashioning black bodies. Her social media handles are _ndhenry and blkcoverarchiveAudrey G. Bennett is the recipient of the 2022 AIGA Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary. She is a 2015 Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and a 1997 College Art Association Professional Development Fellow. She joined the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan as a full professor with tenure in 2018. She was appointed an inaugural University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor in 2019. Professor Bennett is a naturalized American scholar of Afro-Caribbean descent. She hails from Nassau, Bahamas, where she lived for the first three years of her life before moving to her parents' birthplace of Jamaica.
