The Argentina Society of LSE invites you to the presentation of the recent book of Dr. Guadalupe Nogués &quot;Understanding an Elephant. What we can learn from the complexity of the pandemic to face the next global catastrophe&quot;. The presentation will be moderated by Dr. Justin Parkhurst, Associate Professor of Global Health Policy at LSE and author of the book &quot;The politics of evidence&quot;.Humans are problem solvers, but not all problems have the same structure and therefore do not allow the same strategies for addressing them effectively. We are used to tamed problems that start and end, like a two-ended thread or a labyrinth, and where we can clearly see how to solve them. But there is another type of problem that is wicked: they are not linear, they occur in systems with many interconnected elements and with feedback, and they have a strong social component. Wicked problems are more like a spider web than a thread because every point we touch changes another point that we are not touching. Strategies for tamed problems fail in the wicked problems because they do not meet any of their assumptions: we do not understand where they begin, where they end, what we are supposed to do to address them, and what the global effects of our local actions are.
