This presentation will discuss the findings of an undergraduate dissertation study investigating the feasibility of widening the 8.3-mile stretch of the A38 between Carminow Cross and the Dobwalls Bypass. As part of the UK’s Strategic Road Network, this section of road plays a critical role in connecting communities, commuters and businesses across Cornwall. However, historical underinvestment in the corridor has led to reduced safety outcomes and weakened resilience.The talk will explore the risks posed by inaction and evaluate potential solutions ranging from minor improvements to full dualling. A novel multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework, combined with cost-benefit analysis, stakeholder engagement and scenario testing, has been applied across three main criteriaAttendees will gain an insight into the modern technical challenges of highway feasibility appraisal, the trade-offs between policy and engineering constraints, and the role of innovative decision-making tools in shaping future infrastructure delivery. The session will include visualisations, scenario comparisons and reflections on how early-stage studies can better inform strategic investment decisions.
