Training Courses

Our natural history training programme includes courses on ecology, biological recording and identification, all taught be subject specialists with a passion for their chosen species group!

Identifying trees and plants in summer often focuses on flowers and fruit. This course will focus on using vegetative characters (including leaves, stems and buds) that can be used during winter and the 'off seasons'.This course is aimed at 'improver' botanists and early career ecological consultants who wish to develop their skills 'off season'. We will be exploring plant material in and around Perivale Wood as well as using <a href="https://bsbi.org/vegkey" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland and Eric Clement</a>.This course combines the use of classroom-led learning and outside learning opportunities led by our botany tutor to give individuals the skills and confidence to undertake the identification of plants in winter.

What will be covered during this course?<ul><li>The terminology associated with vegetative identification.</li><li>How to examine plants and take specimens for identification.</li><li>How to use ‘The Vegetative Key to the British Flora’ to identify plants that are not in bloom.</li></ul>

Course resourcesThe teaching text for this course will be <a href="https://bsbi.org/vegkey" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland and Eric Clement</a>. Students are encouraged to bring along their own copy if they have one. It is advisable to purchase a copy in advance if students do not own one so that they can make any notes that they would need to practice their winter plant ID skills when using the key in the future.Students are encouraged to bring along a x10 or x20 hand lens if they have one (x10 hand lenses will be available to loan for the day).

Botany tutor: Dr Mark SpencerMark is an experienced and internationally respected botanist. His expertise covers many disciplines including forensic botany, the plants of North-west Europe, invasive species and the history of botanical science and fungi. He also works globally as a seasoned writer, public speaker and television presenter. As a forensic botanist, Mark has worked on various missing person enquiries, murders and other serious crimes.

Perivale WoodT﻿his course will take place at Perivale Wood, with classroom sessions at the Bluebell Education Centre and field sessions exploring the nature reserve. Perivale Wood is a private Local Nature Reserve in Ealing (West London) that is managed by the Selborne Society. It is 27 acres in size, which is mainly ancient oak woodland, with coppiced hazel and swathes of bluebells in the spring. It also has two meadows (5 acres), which are dominated by buttercup and yellow rattle in early summer. F﻿ees and refund policy﻿Course attendee ticket (£50) grants access to the training course Ticket fees include an administrative fee of 20% that is non-refundable. This consists of approximately 10% for Eventbrite fees and 10% for time spent by the Biological Recording Company processing the order.Further cancellation charges will also be incurred for the following:<ul><li>﻿10% cancellation fee for cancellations made over 90 days in advance of the date of the course</li><li>3﻿0% cancellation fee for cancellations made within between 30 and 90 days of the date of the course </li><li>8﻿0% cancellation fee for cancellations made within 30 days of the date of the course</li></ul>
