Winter Rigging

Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) represents25 Mountain Rescue Teams(MRTs) made up of highly trained volunteers who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies and carry out a specialist search and rescue service in the mountains and remote communities in Scotland to keep people safe and help people if and when they get into difficulty.

We have a limited number of spaces available on this course, so we will be restricting bookings initially to a maximum of 2 per team.Please therefore ensure that you have spoken to your Training Officer before registering for this course.

Designed for those team members who can effectively operate without protection on winter Grade I terrain, and have completed the SMR Rigging Practitioner course. The programme will refresh, up-date and improve your practical winter technical rigging knowledge and rescue skills in the field. This course will provide:<ul><li>Practical skills workshops &amp; scenarios</li><li>Technical rigging scenarios</li><li>Theoretical training &amp; discussion groups</li></ul>By the end of the weekend programme the participant will:<ul><li>Understand strengths and weaknesses of snowpack anchors</li><li>Have knowledge of using placed anchor protection for rock and ice</li><li>Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of a broad range of rigging systems and equipment in current use in Scotland</li><li>Understand rescue loads and appropriate rigging construction for lowering and raising</li><li>Understand snowpack hazards when building anchors</li><li>System construction and management of multi-pitch lowers</li></ul>

<h1>Course pre-requisites</h1>In order to ensure the smooth running of the course all candidates are asked to ensure they observe the following conditions:<ul><li>All participants are requested to ensure they have transport arranged as the course programme will necessitate travel to and from training venues. Where possible we ask course participants to bring a team 4×4 vehicle.</li><li>Sufficient personal equipment is required to enable candidates to operate within a mountainous and crag environment and in all weather conditions for the duration of the course.</li><li>Please note that participants need to be competent and comfortable working on steep terrain in the winter environment.</li></ul>

In addition we would encourage participants to bring along copies/knowledge of any team rigging guidelines so that we can start to share this type of information.In addition, you will need to bring a face mask, hand sanitiser, first aid kit and personal medications, as well as a pen/notepad.

<h1>Accommodation</h1>Accommodation is at the Ben Nevis Hotel, Fort William.Check in available from 4pm on Friday evening. You will be staying in a single room.Meals included are breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday evening. You will need to provide your own packed lunches for both days but, given that the hotel is in the middle of Fort William you should be able to get something easily.

<h1>Finally . . . </h1>If you are no longer able to attend this course and need to cancel, could you please give us as much notice as possible so that we can offer the place to someone on the waitlist.
