L﻿ed by Cat LewisH﻿osted by The Yard Print StudioPresented by Wye Valley River FestivalW﻿hat is woad?Indigo was the only source of blue colouring throughout history until synthetic mineral oil dyes came along – Woad (Isatis tinctoria) was the source of the pigment in Europe. It’s been grown in Europe since the Stone Age. It’s now being grown again in many dye gardens and community projects around the UK as we look for more sustainable textile solutions, that are local, plant based, oil and nasty chemical free.W﻿hat you will do:On this practical day workshop, Cat will take you through stages of dyeing cloth using woad, with examples and demonstrations before you have a go yourselves. You’ll learn about the plant and the dyeing process. You&#x27;ll also learn some traditional folding and patterning methods, known as shibori – pleated, bound and stitched techniques. What to bring: <ul><li>All materials for the workshop will be provided. </li><li>Please bring a packed lunch, drinks will be provided.</li></ul>What to wear: <ul><li>You’ll be making lots of splashy colour, so please bring an apron or wear something you don’t mind getting more colourful. </li><li>Please also bring rubber gloves to protect your hands. </li><li>We’ll be working outside and undercover so please dress according to the weather.</li></ul>T﻿he Yard Print Studio has spare aprons and gloves if you don&#x27;t have your own.A﻿dditional information:<ul><li>O﻿ver 18s only (unless pre-arranged with the venue in advance)</li><li>COVID 19 PRECAUTIONS – PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND if you or anyone you have been in contact with or has any symptoms.</li><li>D﻿irections and further details will be sent out nearer the time, but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about the venue or workshop (eg accessibility)</li></ul>Contact: Nichola Goff at The Yard Print Studio: theyardprintstudio@gmail.comAbout Cat LewisI’m a visual artist and maker, based in South Wales. I’m a botanical colour and sustainable textiles specialist with over 30 years’ experience in the fashion and textiles sector. I make my own dyes, inks and prints from bio waste and natural materials. Much of my practice is about facilitating others to make and work in a way that’s less harmful to the environment, less wasteful, longer lasting and more local. https://catlewis.comA﻿bout Yard Print StudioThe Yard Print Studio is run by artist / printmaker Nichola Goff and located in Drybrook in the forest of Dean. The studio offers printmaking courses and master-classes, open access, commissions, mentoring and collaborating on community projects.
