PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE!

A class for people who've already done a woodwork course with me or who already have some experience. A chance to practise in a safe, friendly and fun setting with plenty of guidance.

JUST EIGHT PLACES

I'll keep the class small so that everybody gets plenty of personal attention. (I might have a trusty assistant to help me depending on availability).

HAND TOOLS ONLY

Part of my sustainable living philosophy is to do as much as we can with hand tools - they're more versatile, cheaper and make for a much more pleasant working environment. DESIGN Another part of my philosophy is to encourage people to think about design, we may need to re-design the things we use and the way we make them. So many of the things we use are designed so as to be made with machines - but I don't think that's the sustainable future… And there's no power at the farm anyway :-)

YOUR OWN TOOLS

I have a good selection of tools but do please bring your own if you'd like to try them out, (we never have enough cordless drills). I can show you how to sharpen you're planes, chisels etc.

MATERIALS - YOUR OWN PROJECT?

I have various pieces of wood you can practise with or you might like to bring something in for a project. Please email me to check if it's something we'll be able to work with.

SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT

I have some specialised equipment, like picture framing equipment and the shaving horse, let me know if you'd like to try these - we might need some sort of booking system for them if lots of people want to try them.

REPAIRS & MORE ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

In my woodworking career I've done all sorts of stuff from making and repairing guitars to working on different kinds of low-impact building. So I can get you started on more advanced things like inlay, carving or cutting joints. Please let me know in advance if you have a particular interest so I can set things up.

IAN’S BACKGROUND

I’ve done a wide range of woody things in a long and varied working life, from making and repairing guitars and furniture, designing and fitting kitchens to building various houses including a straw-bale build, roundhouses, caravan conversions, the PCF shed made of pallets and the new shelter. I've used a wide range of softwood, hardwood, reclaimed and green wood. I've come to the conclusion that abundant woodland and woodworking skills, along with food growing and gaining a better understanding of natural processes - and working with them - are the backbone of the sustainable future.

DIRECTIONS TO PERTH COMMUNITY FARM

Take the track down from Jeanfield Road between houses number 29 and 27, through the gates that lead to the cemetery - small sign says "Commonwealth War Graves".

Then take another track through the first gates on your left, sign to Perth Community Farm.

We'll be in the big polytunnel right at the far end of that track. You can park right down towards the tunnel, or there's some space just inside the gates.
