Spend two days immersed in the world of timber framing! Learn the process of turning timber hewn with axes into a functional building. This will cover all the basics of laying out, scribing and cutting an array of joints with the ultimate goal of creating a structure to be raised on the weekend.

We’ll be sticking to hand tools and explore what people in the past used plus how they are used. This will include axes, chisels and saws. Plus we’ll delve into how our early medieval ancestors marked up and measured out frames.

This course will be ran by Marc Cox of Newhaven Coppice, Tom Gallon of Bourne Valley Timber Frames and David Wilson of High Elms Timberworks. All three have worked on a variety of projects across the UK and Europe both independently and as part of the Carpenters Fellowship and Charpentiers Sans Frontiers.

This forms part of a week of woodworking dedicated to the tree-wrights, carpenters and timber framers from the past. Over the course of the week a small team will be constructing a complete timber frame from a pile of logs to a standing building. Join us for a series of hands-on workshops and public open days to celebrate all things wood!

No experience necessary, but a general level of fitness is required due to this being a very physical activity.

Tea & Coffee and refreshments provided.
