About this event
About the Tour
There has been a place of Worship on the site of the present day Worcester Cathedral since at least the 7th Century. Prior to that there is archaeological evidence of both Anglo Saxon and Roman use of the site from when we have dug down through the grounds. Construction of the cathedral in its present location was begun in 1084, and it is believed that the Bishop established a “palace” to the north of the Cathedral at a similar time. Although the monastery closed in 1540, the Cathedral retained a large number of grounds and gardens, some now situated on the site of former monastic buildings. This tour will explore those grounds, including those around the old Bishops palace, the monastery and look into their history and what we have today.
Weather
Please come dressed for being outside for the hour of the tour appropriate to the weather of the day! We normally carry on whatever the weather, but if conditions are really not hospitable then we will cancel and provided a refund. The decision to cancel will usually be made at least an hour beforehand, but it might be subject to a last minute decision.
Access
Most of the tour is outside, in gardens and along external pathways that are not always even, including one gravel pathway. Part of the gardens in the Old Bishop's Palace are down a set of steps. It is possible to do this tour if you have accessibility requirements, but there may be a few locations that are not possible to access. Please get in touch if you have further questions on this.
