Description

Working in Publishing – A hands on course

The aim of this course is to inspire people, especially young people (16+), to consider a career in the publishing industry. It would give them a taste of some of the roles that they can aspire to within the industry and hopefully motivate them to take on advanced training within their area of interest.

This course is a year long, spread over three terms of 13 weeks each.

Part 1

Sow Good Karma – Your online presence

Duration – 13 weeks, once a week for 3 hours

Cost - £400 per student

Target roles

  • Author

  • Proofreader/Editor

  • Illustrator

  • Animator


The aim of the course is to talk students through the various roles that are available in publishing and guide them on the basics needed to set themselves up for working in any aspect of publishing.

The minimum entry requirement for the course is being able to speak, read and write in English (no formal qualifications needed) and the ability to use a computer and programmes like MS Office.

Below are some handy extra skills to have:

  • Author – speak, read and write in English

  • Proofreader/editor – minimum GCSE English C grade

  • Illustrator – minimum can draw with pen and paper

  • Animator – minimum can create videos using a phone


Using in class exercises and take home assignments, the students will work on establishing their online presence in any of their chosen fields of interest and building a portfolio.


At the end of the course, students that choose to work as:

  • Authors would have samples of their writing on their websites/blog.

    • Should they wish to not continue to part 2, skills learnt here will enable them to work as bloggers and earn passive income from their blogs.

    • Should students go on to take courses to improve their writing, they can eventually get work as freelance writers

  • Proofreaders/Editors would have testimonials, reviews and/or credits of published works that they proofread/edited.

    • Should they wish to not continue to part 2, skills learnt here will enable them to work as freelance proofreaders and also earn passive income from their blogs.

    • Students can go on to take advance courses to improve their writing. This would enable them to eventually get work as freelance Editors

    • Students can also go on to take courses on other languages. This will enable them get work as translators, including translating books written in other languages.

  • Illustrators would have a portfolio of illustrations they have done for authors in exchange for credit and a review of their services.

    • Should they wish to not continue to part 2, skills learnt here will enable them to work as freelance illustrators and also earn passive income from their blogs.

    • Students can go on to take advance courses to learn more advance skills eg digital illustrations. This would enable them to get a wider range of work as freelance illustrators

  • Animators would have a portfolio of book video trailers they have done for authors in exchange for credit and a review of their services.

    • Should they wish to not continue to part 2, skills learnt here will enable them to work as freelance animators and also earn passive income from their blogs.

    • Students can go on to take advance courses to learn more advance skills eg 3D cartoon rendering. This would enable them to get a wider range of work as freelance animators

Part 2

Reap Good Karma – Your manuscript

Duration – 13 weeks

Cost - £400 per student

Using in class exercises and take home assignments, the students will work on writing a manuscript for publication.

At the end of the course, students (divided into groups to have one person from each skill set) will have a finished manuscript that is ready for publishing and marketing. There would be a:

  • Well developed manuscript, that is

  • Proofread and edited, with an

  • Illustrated book cover art, and a

  • Promotional video trailer


Should students wish to not continue to part 3, they can continue as described above but at an advanced level.

Writers can also take a creative writing course to improve their writing.

Part 3

Reap Good Karma – Marketing

Duration – 13 weeks

Cost - £400 per student

Using in class exercises and take home assignments, the students will work on creating awareness of their book as a pre-order book, gathering pre-orders and advance reviews.

At the end of the course, students will have their manuscripts from part 2 fully published and available for sale in a number of online platforms including Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Nobles and many more. There would be a marketing plan set in place to sustain reviews and sales of books.

Students can carry on as described above to improve themselves further
