2020 brought into focus long histories of systemic racism, violence, and silencing. Since the killing of George Floyd on May 25th and amidst the BLM movement there has been a surge of initiatives and conversations around racism, diversity and inclusion. This coupled with Covid and Lockdown has perhaps fostered a long overdue focus on how we can implement positive changes.

This afternoon will bring together key themes of Emily's work with relevant themes and people. It will equip Art Leaders with the knowledge and confidence needed to begin to make positive practical changes to their provision; changes that are well thought out and authentically inclusive and diverse.

Navigating issues such as cultural appropriation and anti-racism in the context of Art Education can be challenging without support - this session will offer that and more.

• Using self reflection to understand unconscious biases and how these impact curriculum development and teaching
• Diversifying art forms and artists appropriately
• Cultural appropriation Vs making art inspired by other cultures and artists
• How every child can feel valued through art experiences
• Reclaiming cultural capital
• Practical ideas for lesson planning

Emily has long been working with schools and organisations around themes of diversifying art curricula and designing more inclusive art experiences. More recently her work has included developing programmes alongside Tate (schools and teachers teams) to foster cultural appreciation, delivering presentations on themes such as Reclaiming Cultural Capital (Freelands/Artistteacher/Crafts Council) and How Primary Art can respond to a call to change (NSEAD). As well as working with cultural organisations, she continues to provide CPD opportunities for schools and teachers.
