Workshop: adapting interviews & communication for autistic candidates

Employers, HR professionals, and other staff working in the employment industry are invited to attend our free workshop on adapting employment interviews for autistic people at the University of Bath (if you are unsure about the suitability of the workshop for you and your team, please email j.norris@bath.ac.uk). This event is not open to the general public. To attend this workshop you should currently have minimal autism knowledge or not be significantly adapting your procedures for autistic people, or should be looking to develop your current methods. 
Despite possessing valuable skills, 85% of autistic people are not in full time work, and around 46% of those in employment are over-educated or over-skilled for their role. Performance in job interviews is crucial, but autistic people's difficulties with social communication (e.g., being able to effectively interpret the question and gauging the appropriate level of detail) and with memory (e.g., difficulties in recalling information in response to open questions) mean that they are usually at a disadvantage in standard job interviews. Past research has focused on how autistic people can change their behaviours in interviews. However, even with coaching, autistic candidates may still struggle to emphasise their best attributes in interviews. 
The aim of this workshop is to use our new research into <A HREF="https://www.bath.ac.uk/projects/supporting-autistic-adults-in-interviews/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">how interviews can be effectively adapted for autistic people</A> to develop adaptations to interview questions that facilitate two-way communication between employers and candidates. Many organisations recognise the valuable talents of autistic people, and are already adapting their selection procedures to support autistic candidates (e.g., JP Morgan), bringing a range of valuable, under-appreciated skills to the workplace, boosting creativity and profits.
This free workshop will be led by Dr Jade Norris and Dr Katie Maras from the Centre for Applied Autism Research (CAAR) at the University of Bath. Our workshop aims to provide more than standard training or awareness programmes, which often take problematic ‘one size fits all’ approaches. Attendees will be supported by researchers and autistic adults to create practical methods to facilitate communication with autistic people. You will leave the workshop with concrete, evidence-based plans for how your interviewing and communication procedures can be adapted effectively, and will have the opportunity to become certified as an Ambassador for Autism (more information on the scheme <A HREF="http://www.tinyURL.com/AforAInfo" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</A>.

No. The event is free to attend for eligible attendees. If you do book and later need to cancel, please let us know so that we can offer your place to someone else.
