Layout optimisation is a powerful computational design technique that can be used to identify efficient arrangements of members forming buildings, bridges and other structures. Its use can lead to structures that require far less material to construct and which have lower embodied carbon.The recently completed IStructE supported, UK government funded, BUILD-OPT research project has led to the development of layout optimisation methods capable of generating new structural forms. Many of the methods developed can now be applied by practitioners. In this three-part workshop layout optimisation methods will be discussed and applied to a range of building and bridge design problems. Each part of the event is complementary, but can be booked separately. A <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-mC9f-52cHdvrfohHSguU9YjcI2Xc6XB" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">detailed event programme</a> is now available.Part 1: Hands-on computer laboratory session (limited availability - £25 refundable registration fee)09:30 – 13:00This session provides an opportunity to apply state-of-the-art layout optimisation methods developed as part of the BUILD-OPT project to the design of buildings and other structures. Specifically, a new Rhino / Grasshopper plugin (&#x27;Peregrine&#x27;), developed in partnership with Arup, will be made available to participants, allowing them to identify efficient arrangements of members in trusses and frames. The interactive nature of the plugin will permit a wide range of design solutions to be explored, for both example problems and problems chosen by participants.Participants will: 1. Learn how to use the &#x27;Peregrine&#x27; optimisation plugin for Rhino / Grasshopper to solve simple computational design optimization problems.2. Learn how to apply the plugin to a practical design problem of their choice.3. Learn how to explore the design space and compare candidate designs.Participants will need to bring their own laptop PC to use in this session. The plugin will be freely usable for application to practical projects for at least 6 months after the session.(As places are very limited, a £25 fee will be levied, but will be refunded within 5 working days of the event to all participants who attend the session.)Part 2: Mini-conference14:00 – 17:00The mini-conference will comprise a series of short presentations delivered by members of the BUILD-OPT research team and by project partners from industry. Key outcomes from the research will be presented by BUILD-OPT researchers whilst project partners will report on their experience of applying layout optimisation methods in design practice. The mini-conference will be chaired by Jon Leach, chair of the IStructE Digital Workflows and Computational Design Panel. Speakers will include Matthew Gilbert and Linwei He (University of Sheffield), Paul Shepherd (University of Bath), Jacek Gondzio (University of Edinburgh), Catherine Rankine and Vincenzo Reale (Arup), Pete Winslow and Helen Fairclough (Expedition Engineering). The mini-conference will conclude with a panel discussion - panellists: Jon Leach, Catherine Rankine, Andy Tyas (University of Sheffield) and Paul Jeffries (Ramboll). This will focus on current challenges and future opportunities in the field.Participants will: 1. Gain an appreciation of the range of applicability of available structural optimisation methods.2. Gain an awareness of key outcomes from a recent government funded research project focusing on layout optimisation.3. See how layout optimisation methods can be incorporated in modern design workflows.Part 3: Evening lecture - Doing more with less: layout optimisation of structures 18:00 – 19:30Speakers: Matthew Gilbert &amp; Paul ShepherdIn the talk new methods developed as part of the UK government funded BUILD-OPT research project will be outlined and then applied to a range of building and bridge design projects. It will be shown that the tools developed fit within modern digital design workflows and enable a balance to be struck between constructability and material efficiency.
