About this event

This is an in-person workshop.

PLEASE NOTE: Full refunds are given up to 10 days before the event.

Join us at our historic premises on Piccadilly and learn how to make your own notebook. Using archival materials and basic equipment, this workshop complements our exhibition Naturalists’ Notebooks.

Led by our in-house conservator Janet Ashdown, this class will teach you to make a unique A5 pamphlet notebook. We will be using conservation quality unruled paper with a choice of marbled paper designs for the cover. This classic binding style uses minimal tools.

You will also have the opportunity to browse the exhibition and learn how naturalists recorded nature, in the field and at home. You may even gain a little inspiration for how to use your notebook along the way! Make one for yourself or as a gift for a loved one.

This is a beginner-level workshop, no previous experience is required.

Note: This workshop is suitable for ages 16+ due to cutting tools.

Our conservator Janet Ashdown studied Conservation at Camberwell College of Arts and joined the Linnean Society in 2000 as a book and paper conservator. Janet has worked on the conservation and preservation of books, manuscripts, artworks and photographs and has given short talks on paper conservation. She also undertook conservation of the herbarium of the Linnean Society’s founder, Sir James Edward Smith, and is an integral part of our successful AdoptLINN programme, where items are ‘adopted’ and conserved for future use.
