Workshop: Safety Considerations around Supersized Structures

Constructing Excellence is partnering with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation to deliver a three-hour workshop on the safety of supersized structures.
In June 2017 the Lloyd's Register Foundation published its insight report on global safety challenges. This report summarized perceived challenges to safety around the world, based on a survey of those working in industry and academia. In this report, the safety of supersized structures was highlighted as a global risk. The Foundation is keen to gain a better understanding of the safety challenges associated with supersized structures, including the following:
- understand how, and what makes the safety challenges of supersized structures different from that of more conventional sized structures
- determine which supersized structures present the greatest risk, and what it is about them that causes the greater risk e.g. materials, design, manufacture, construction, evacuation etc.
- find out which companies or research organisations are active in addressing these risks
- establish what practical steps can be taken to enhance the safety of these supersized structures and save lives
Supersized structures could include mega-buildings, ocean-going ships, stadia, metro systems and other infrastructure where there has been a significant increase (certainly over the last decade or so) in size and/or the number of people that can be accommodated (and can therefore be in harm’s way) at any one time.

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation is a UK charity established in 2012. Its mission is to help protect the safety of life and property, and to advance education, engineering-related research and public engagement. The Foundation connects science, safety and society by supporting research of the highest quality, and acting as catalysts working with others to achieve maximum impact through its grant giving.
Constructing Excellence is a platform from which to stimulate, debate and drive much needed change in the construction sector. Our thought leading members from the entire supply chain – clients, industry and users – share a vision for change through innovation and collaboration.
The BRE Trust commissions research into the challenges faced by the built environment and publishes project findings which act as authoritative guidance to the construction industry. Through its activities, the Trust aims to achieve:
- a higher quality built environment
- built facilities that offer improved functionality and value for money
- a more efficient and sustainable construction sector with a higher level of innovative practice.
