Turning Green in Watercolour: Paul Talbot-Greaves RI
Green is one of those elusive colours that seem so difficult to get right. Come and learn all about green in watercolour.
Workshop Details
Green is one of those elusive colours that seem so difficult to get right. Come and learn all about green in watercolour, how to make green using colour theory, how to use tube greens, as well as how to steer greens through bright, cool, warm, and grey variants as well as making perfect shadow greens. In this workshop Paul will share his knowledge in not only creating the greens you want, but also in creating natural looking greens that fit into any landscape. The day will begin with some colour theory and a discussion about green followed by a full demonstration by Paul. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to put the theory into your own painting with Paul's assistance throughout the afternoon.
About the Artist
Paul Talbot-Greaves RI is a professional artist who works with watercolour, oil and acrylic. His work reflects the rugged scenery of the landscape either in the context of wild places or in the nature of the Yorkshire hills where he lives.
He draws his inspiration from historical connections using layers of colour, texture, shapes and patterns applied with energy and feeling. His main inspiration is light and the effects created by the contrasts of shadows.
Paul writes articles for The Artist magazine (UK) and has four practical art books published. He has won many awards and shows regularly with the RI in London. He is represented by numerous galleries based around the North of England.
Materials Required
- There are no compulsory colours, but as a guide, it would be helpful to have Winsor yellow, yellow ochre, cerulean blue, French ultramarine, cadmium red, and alizarin crimson, ivory black and permanent sap green.
- Natural hairbrushes and/or synthetics, ideally one large, one or two medium-sized round, flat or mop types, a small synthetic round and a fine rigger brush.
- Saunders Waterford, Arches, Winsor Newton Professional or any similar cotton paper in either rough or cold pressed (NOT) surface. I would recommend working no bigger than 38 x 28cm unless you are confident in applying large washes of paint.
- Matt medium
Please bring along some photo references to work from, either printed or on an i-Pad or tablet. For best results, include a grey scale (black and white) image of the same. Spare photos will also be available to use on the day.
Other equipment
Waterpot, palette, Pencils 4B or 6B, putty rubber, kitchen roll, painting board, masking tape, water spray, household sponge wipe (thin moppet type).
Materials Provided
- Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:
- Table Top Easel
- 13 x 17 12mm Warp resistant MDF Board
- Palette or Mixing Plate
- Limited sundry products are also available if you forget anything.
