Workshop with Stephanie Dyer: a22 – All Instruments Welcome

By Colchester Early Music

Overview

Explore Renaissance instrumental music with Welsh virtuoso trombonist Stephanie Dyer

Bring vocal and instrumental Renaissance works to life in this ensemble performance workshop for winds – cornetts, curtals, recorders, sackbuts and shawms – and string players, with continuo very welcome for those who can supply their own instruments. Modern string, wind and brass instruments are also warmly invited, provided they are able to read concert-pitch notation and blend sensitively with the group. Develop articulation, tone and stylistic insight while exploring practical approaches to historical performance. Because of unsupervised breaks and interactions with adults, participants must be aged 16 or older to attend without parent supervision.

Music will be shared digitally in advance of the workshop for you to print at home or read on the device of your choice. Prebooking is therefore essential so that we have your contact details and can email you the link to the shared folder.

Pitch A=440. Please bring your own music stand and a packed lunch (local shops/cafes are aprox 1 mile away). Tea, coffee & biscuits will be provided, donations appreciated.

Stephanie is also giving a concert for us on Sunday 18th January. Please see www.colchesterearlymusic.org.uk for details of this and our other events.

Welsh virtuoso historical trombonist Stephanie Dyer enjoys a career as an Early musician, modern performer and educator. Born and raised in South Wales, Stephanie studied at King’s College, Cambridge, Royal Academy of Music, London and Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Switzerland. She performs with internationally renowned historic brass group His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, of which she has been a member since 2016; and is principal trombone of Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw in Holland, one of the most distinguished period instrument orchestras in the world.

Stephanie's performance activities are diverse: equally at home on the concert platform, in theatres and studios, she can be heard in the West End (Wicked) and in touring productions (The Book of Mormon; Miss Saigon), was trombonist and cover conductor for Disney's Aladdin (UK/Ireland Tour, 2023–25), and featured in last year's Songs of Praise Christmas Special, 'Candlelit Christmas', broadcast on BBC One. She also appears on numerous recordings, spanning historical performance and video game soundtracks.

A devoted teacher, Stephanie is Baroque Trombone professor at the Royal Academy of Music and teaches trombone at the University of Cambridge. She is also a passionate workshop leader across the UK and internationally, including for the regional Early Music Fora (2021–), Beauchamp Adult Early Music Course (2024–); International Early Music Summer School, Ścinawka Górna (Poland, 2017–), Warsaw Sackbut & Cornett Festival (2021–); and for Alta Capella Vianensis (the Netherlands, 2022–).
