World-building: An Introduction

World-building: An Introduction

By Nottingham Writers' Studio

Overview

The first of a series of two workshops, getting you started with building imaginary worlds.

THE WORKSHOP

If you write fantasy, sci-fi or anything in-between, you might need your own world. Maybe another Narnia, Middle-earth or Earthsea. Alternatively, if you've got warp drive, you could visit worlds like Tatooine, Pandora or Gallifrey. What could be more enjoyable than inventing an imaginary land? You make the rules! But where to begin? With a whole world to create it can become overwhelming.

The workshop uses presentation, group work, quizzes, and practice, in an atmosphere that is friendly and relaxed. Ideal for anyone writing in the speculative genre. Feel free to bring along your own writing to sharpen up, or start from scratch in the session.

THE TUTOR

Join award-winning author Ian C Douglas, the maker of a few make-believe locations himself, for this introduction to world-building. Spend time on the origins of your world, such as creation myths, landscapes, and peoples.

Ian C Douglas is the traditionally published author writing sci-fi and fantasy fiction. He has over a decade experience running workshops on world-building. Find out more about Ian at www.iancdouglas.com
