About the Artist
Write &Move is led by Paul Smethurst, a dance and movement specialist with over 20 years’ experience across theatre, education, and community practice. His performance career spans the West End, UK and international touring, physical theatre, and opera, and he now works as a freelance director, choreographer, movement practitioner, and creative engagement consultant. He is also a board member of One Dance UK and has collaborated with leading companies including Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Gecko. His creative work has been presented at venues including Sadler’s Wells and the Edinburgh Fringe.
Paul’s practice is rooted in co-creation with marginalised communities, placing participants at the centre as collaborators and authors. He works extensively with young people, LGBTQ+ communities, refugees and asylum seekers, older adults, and people with complex needs, designing inclusive and responsive processes that centre lived experience. His interdisciplinary approach blends dance and movement with voice, text, and visual storytelling, creating rich, accessible work that builds confidence, celebrates identity, and fosters meaningful connection.
Alongside his arts practice, Paul is a certified Nature Therapist and Forest Bathing Guide, bringing a holistic, wellbeing-focused perspective to his work. This deepens his commitment to care, connection, and creating environments where participants feel supported, empowered, and able to take creative risks.
