This initiative, which is part of the Academic and Professional Development Programme, is aimed at both PhD students who have passed their upgrade, and who perhaps feel they are cast adrift with their doctoral theses still to write.
The aim of the writing coaching group is to introduce PhD students into the culture of writing groups, where they will read and discuss their work with colleagues from other disciplines (to ensure a non-competitive vibe). The writing groups formed in these sessions will build a sense of fellowship, offer structure to the writing process, and create an environment of trust, in which constructive criticism may be offered and acted on.
Writer Marina Benjamin will lead the writing coaching sessions on December 1st and March 16th, inducting students into writing groups by laying down the etiquette of belonging to a writing group and also imparting the lessons professional writers have learnt about sharing and critiquing other people’s work. She offers practical guidelines to students about how to critique another’s person’s work.
