Sutton Writers is an inclusive organisation that seeks to help and encourage creative writers. Some of our members are published, though many write purely for their own pleasure, and others have joined us to share their writing with others whose opinion they respect and trust.It’s sometimes difficult to write alone; simply talking to like-minded people can be a help, enabling the writer to see their own way forward.To join, there is no minimum qualification, no audition – every member is equal, welcomed and encouraged. We meet monthly to hear from speakers across the writing and publishing fields, and we have weekly workshops where members share work in progress for feedback.“Writing” can encompass so many different aspects of the craft, and we aim to support and encourage creatives no matter their chosen genre or format. Our members have a wide range of writing interests – there are always a few novels of diverse genres, poetry, playwriting, short stories, works of fact or fiction, all at various stages from an idea to the final draft.A writing group for now, and the futureWe live in a changing world where technology offers both challenges and opportunities, and we are committed to an awareness and a use of the developments available to improve our offering and assist our members. Our speakers to date have included authors, agents and publishers, but also podcasters, illustrators and marketers – and we’re always open to suggestions for engaging, interesting and educational guests.The various workshops offer an opportunity for us to share our work and to get opinions, help and advice. Our work is personal to us and we all share the same feelings, so any criticism is always gentle and constructive.We also run our own closed competitions, and all members are welcome to enter. Slams and open mic nights are a regular feature, too.Members of all ages and backgrounds are welcome at Sutton Writers, but to build a stronger Sutton Writers needs a continuous flow of new members, who in their turn will help to form Sutton Writers in the years to come. Many writers fit into one of two camps: planners or pantsers.  This masterclass aims to look at ways to help pantsers work more effectively.

It is commonly accepted in the writing community that many writers fit into one of two camps: planners or pantsers. Those who work best by planning their projects in advance, and those who work best by making it up as they go along. But the majority of structured advice and suggested ways of working are aimed at planners, or work towards trying to make pantsers work more like planners.This masterclass aims to look at ways to help pantsers work effectively in their preferred way of working, and mitigating any difficulties that might come with making it up as you go along. It will also show how pantsing methods can help planners to be more spontaneous, embrace new ideas, and think about more flexible ways of working. This masterclass will work on the topics of:<ul><li>What is pantsing and where do I fall on the spectrum?</li><li>How to set targets and goals when there&#x27;s no plan </li><li>Non-linear writing: pros and cons </li><li>Maintaining plot consistency </li><li>Getting to the finish line without knowing what it is </li><li>How to keep writing interesting after the first draft.</li></ul>Vicky Brewster is a freelance editor of long-form fiction living in South Wales. She organises (usually)the annual gothic writing retreat, The Writing Haunt, and curates the spooky and speculative book subscription service, Books Outside the Box. She is in the second year of a part-time PhD in English at Swansea University, researching hauntings in 21st century fiction. She is currently working on an advent calendar choose your own adventure story to be released in November.
