An unprecedented art exhibition “York Air Map” is set to captivate audiences with its thought-provoking and immersive exploration of one of our planet’s most pressing issues. Opening for one night only on Saturday 12th August at BrewYork, Walmgate, this ground-breaking exhibition brings together the power of art to shed light on the multifaceted challenges posed by air pollution.Collaboratively, artist and lecturer Clare Nattress and atmospheric scientist Dr Daniel Bryant have curated York Air Map, a website that reveals ground level air pollution data in York. The project has recruited sixteen citizen scientists who have collected data during bicycle commutes of ambient air pollution around the city. Over the course of June, sensor data has been uploaded in real time to York Air Map of five air pollutants, Nitrogen Dioxide, Volatile Organic Compounds and Particulate Matter across different size ranges, revealing insightful pollution hotspots.The project aims to foster a deep understanding of the detrimental impact of air pollution on our health, ecosystems and climate. Through the diverse array of mediums such as a digital interactive map, photography, artist books, pollution diaries, smellable filters, and audio recordings visitors will take on an emotional and intellectual journey inspiring awareness, dialogue, and collective action.The exhibition goes beyond being a traditional art exhibition by actively engaging the audience in environmental advocacy. Visitors are encouraged to handle air pollution sensors and examine the air in which they are breathing. Visitors will also be able to register their interest to become the next group of citizen scientists recruited to collect data for the project in the autumn.Join us to officially launch “York Air Map” on Saturday 12th August in BrewYork, Walmgate from 7:30-9pm and embark on an artistic journey that challenges perceptions, sparks conversations, and mobilises us to protect the air we breathe. Together, let us envision a future where clean air is not just a dream, but a shared reality.
