York and the North: Coinage, Silver and Power in York and the Viking North
Speaker: Dr Andrew Woods (Head of Collections and Research at York Museums Trust)
Two pieces of new research - into the camps of the viking ‘Great Army’ and the origins of silver within the Bedale hoard – have underpinned the Yorkshire Museum’s major new exhibition Viking North. This paper will similarly take this new research as catalyst to reconsider coinage, silver and power in Northern England between 850 and 950. It will focus on the new evidence from metal-detected and excavated coin finds, analysing the changing scales of production and patterns of use in York and across the North. It will draw out interpretation of the role of elite power and the relationship between York and the North.
The lecture will be followed by a wine reception.
