York C20 website launch!

Come and join us in person or online to launch a new website charting York's unsung C20 architecture, previously hidden in plain sight.

You are welcome to join us for the public launch of a new website - <a href="https://www.yorkc20.york.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://yorkc20.york.ac.uk</a> - made by students of the History of Art Department, University of York. It seeks to engage with wide-ranging audiences to creatively tell previously uncharted stories about York&#x27;s distinctive - often remarkable - twentieth-century architectural heritage. A deeply varied and intriguing set of post-1914 buildings are brought back to life through 30 illustrated vignettes authored by students that speak for those who built and commissioned them about how they saw themselves in the modern world.T﻿he project benefited from an AHRC Knowledge Exchange fund, and collaborations with the York Civic Trust, the Twentieth Century Society, and guest speakers from across built environment spheres. E﻿veryone is welcome: please sign up for a free ticket to attend in person (limited places) or online. Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of the Department of the History of Art, University of York and by the York Civic Trust. Attendees in person will also get a free, beautifully produced YorkC20 map! O﻿ur guest of honour is Dr Jane Grenville. The student contributors are: Richard Burrows, Pamela Chapman, Alizée Cisternino, Ida Houdart, Tom Howard, Yanqi Huang, Ania Kaczynska, Samuel Kennedy, Lucia Martin, Anna Mayo, Giulia Schirripa, Vienna Shelley, Jessica Smith, Lucia Spelsberg-Hornsby, Fruzsina Vida, and Finn Walsh.

Photo: © William Farnworth, 1962, reproduced from an original held by City of York Council/Explore Libraries and Archives Mutual, York: Y/EDU/5/3/19/22.The website's coverage is wide-ranging, from listed buildings like the Theatre Royal extension (1967, by Patrick Gwynne), the former Odeon cinema (1937, by Harry Weedon), and Bootham School Assembly Hall (1965-6, by Trevor Dannatt), to unassuming buildings like the recently demolished Tang Hall Library (1962, Edgar Firth, above), part of an elegant constellation of post-war community libraries by the City Architect’s Department, at whose deathbed students of this project paid their mournful respects in April 2022 (below).
