Surrey Centre for Cyber Security

Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS) was established by the University of Surrey to consolidate and organise its Cyber Security activities across the University.

Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS) is the heart of the Cyber Security activities across the University of Surrey. It is one of the 14 Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACEs-CSR) recognised by the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in partnership with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).  Our focus is on “Security by Design”, with particular expertise in trusted systems, privacy and authentication, secure communications, and multimedia security and forensics, with human dimensions in security as a cross-cutting theme.   We have a strong ethos of applying theory into practice, and the application domains we work in include transportation (automotive, rail), democracy (e-voting), telecommunications, digital economy, and law enforcement.

In addition to the technical core, the Centre brings together substantial interdisciplinary capability and resources across the University, which has been investing in Cyber Security as a high-priority research area since 2004.

The Centre also runs Surrey’s Information Security MSc programme, which has received GCHQ certification. The programme brings together technical and managerial aspects of Cyber Security and has a strong contribution from industry.

Surrey Space Centre

The Surrey Space Centre is a world leading Centre of Excellence in Space Engineering. Our strategy is to underpin the technical development of the space industry through its advanced research programmes.

We are a world’s leading research centre for small, cost effective space missions, generating leading research and bringing innovation to our spin-out company SSTL and pushing the boundaries of satellite technologies and applications.

Surrey's pioneering small satellite activities started in 1979 as an academic activity at the University, leading to the formation of a highly successful spin-out company Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). Astrium acquired SSTL in 2009 and established a long-term strategic collaboration with the University to further advance the University’s cutting edge space research capacity.

We provide well focused space engineering undergraduate, postgraduate and industrial short courses, training the next generation space scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Staffed with ~90 individuals amongst academics, researchers, and support staff we develop new innovative technologies which are exploited by the space industry. We have a large body of PhD, academic and industrial research, with a direct route through SSTL for rapid commercialisation.

SSC has a multidisciplinary engineering competence that gives us a full end-to-end capability, unique in UK academia, to develop and execute space missions, from concept study to spacecraft design & MAIT, to mission operations and exploitation of space data to support engineering research and education. In our labs we carry out leading edge applied research that that covers all the main domains relevant to space engineering, and cost effective missions.

In our labs we explore a wide range of engineering issues: advanced mission analysis; astrodynamics (including formation flying) and propulsion; payload engineering; on-board computing, embedded systems and spacecraft internetworks; space robotics; communications, radar and RF systems; remote sensing applications and instrumentation; orbit and attitude determination and control; power systems and electric propulsion, space plasma and ionising radiation environment and effects; nano/pico-satellite technologies; Planetary rovers and UAVs, spacecraft structures and mechanisms.

We also have our own SSC’s Satellite Mission Control Centre with full capability to command and control the satellites to execute mission operations and download data for user’s applications.
