Cockburn Association - The Edinburgh Civic Trust

The Cockburn Association, established in 1875, is the oldest civic amenity body in the UK and we are entirely independent from local and national government. We are regarded as an influential and authoritative charity and enjoy the support of a diverse range of individual, affiliate and corporate members. We are active throughout Edinburgh and work, largely through volunteers, to protect and enhance our outstanding environment for everyone.

The Association campaigns on issues which impact on our daily lives in Edinburgh. From pressing for improvements to streets to commenting on large scale development proposals and protecting architectural gems, our work is guided by the views of our members. Major decisions are taken by our committees – comprised of professionals and those with a lay interest in architecture, planning, conservation, transport, engineering and the environment. The Cockburn committees are all drawn from the membership.

Our efforts can be seen in almost every area of Edinburgh. For 144 years we have been at the vanguard of many successful campaigns - often in the face of fierce opposition - to safeguard buildings and public green space that is now cherished and celebrated. We are proud of our past achievements, but we are also focused very much on the future of the city and we work to encourage excellence in new architecture and design – the creation of tomorrow’s heritage.

An important element of our work is to increase interest and participation in the built and natural environments and the planning process itself.  Each year we organise Edinburgh Doors Open Day - a free celebration of the world-class architecture and heritage we have right on our doorstep.
