A National Documentary Initiative Highlighting Black Participation in STEM Using Community Storytelling To Illuminate Hidden Figures And Future Worlds
Scientists in the Family is a multi-pronged project that brings to the forefront the suppressed story of African American participation in and contributions to science. It uses stories of Black families along with contemporary and historical Black scientists to examine the role of politics, spirituality and representation around African American participation in the sciences, crowdsourced from Black communities as evidenced in their family photographic archives.
Scientists in the Family uses Community Photo Sharing roadshows to source and highlight science stories in Black families; and social media to both distribute (call) and inspire user-generated media content (response).
Scientists in the Family brings these private narratives into the public realm in a way which allows them to be remixed and reinterpreted to form a new, inclusive co-created collective narrative which reimagines a Black future in science and technology from an authentic cultural, social and political perspective.
