Dr Helen McCarthy

Dr Helen McCarthy is The Appetite Doctor. She developed Appetite Retraining to help people lose weight by re-learning to eat in tune with their body's natural hunger and fullness signals.

Appetite Retraining is the antidote to fad diets. It focuses on re-learning to eat in tune with your body's natural hunger and fullness signals. You start with how you eat now, and make one change at a time to your unhelpful eating habits, so that the progress you make is easy to sustain.  You eat all your favourite foods so that you don't feel deprived. The focus is on maximising enjoyment.  By learning to eat in tune with your body, you learn to eat less, but better.

A unique feature of Appetite Retraining is that Helen helps you identify your mental blocks or "saboteurs" to losing weight, and gives you advice about how to overcome them.

Helen is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society who has worked as a Clinical Psychologist since 1989.  She has a B.Sc. Honours degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Durham and a Doctorate in Psychology from the University of Oxford. After leaving Oxford Helen trained as a Clinical Psychologist within the British National Health Service and worked as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS for a number of years. She now has a private practice in Bristol and Cardiff.
