Hyewon Chang
Cellist Hyewon Chang was born in Seoul, South Korea, and began playing the cello at the age of 18. After two years, she pursued formal cello studies at Kyungwon University, where served as an assistant principal cellist of the KU Symphony Orchestra. Her passion for music led her to the United States, where she studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music under a scholarship and graduated early under the mentorship of Jean-Michel Fonteneau. During her time in San Francisco, Hyewon developed her love for chamber and orchestra music, taking lessons from Brian Thornton, Amos Yang, and Anthony Kitai and participating in a masterclass with Weilerstein.
Hyewon’s musical talent has been recognized through numerous competitions and performances, including playing as a soloist in Albert Herring Opera at the New World Center during the Miami Summer Music Festival in 2015 with a full scholarship and also receiving a full scholarship to participate in the Texas Summer Orchestra Music Festival in 2016. Since moving to Australia in 2018, Hyewon has continued to build her professional experience, passing an audition for the casual cello position in WASO in 2019 and tutoring cello at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts from 2019 to 2020. Her achievements include winning the Honorable Award in the American Music talent competition in 2021 and the 3rd prize in the France Music Competition in 2022. Hyewon also recently received her master’s in teaching (Secondary) from Edith Cowan University in 2022. Additionally, she has been selected to serve as a panellist for the string section at the upcoming Fremantle Eisteddfod Competitions in 2023. She recently moved to Brisbane.
