The James Hutton Institute is a world-leading scientific organisation encompassing a distinctive range of integrated strengths in land, crop, waters, environmental and socio-economic science. It undertakes research for customers including the Scottish and UK governments, the EU and other organisations worldwide. The institute has around 500 staff and 150 PhD students.
The Institute conducts research around natural capital, crop productivity, sustainable agriculture, weed, pest and disease resistance, soil science, waters, and socio-economics.
The James Hutton Institute’s commercial services include environmental consultancy drawing on unparalleled experience in soil and water consultancy, and land evaluation. It undertakes contract research, especially plant breeding, licenses plant varieties internationally and delivers analytical services.
The Institute takes its name from Scottish Enlightenment scientist James Hutton, regarded as the founder of modern geology and also an experimental farmer and agronomist. www.hutton.ac.uk
