Are you under 30 or over 60? Join our intergenerational textile workshop series for an opportunity to create together, build connections and share.

Led by artist Kim Chin, this workshop will provide a space for intergenerational dialogue and creative expression through textile banner-making, silk-screen print and engaged conversation. In slow and collective making sessions, we will discuss themes such as connection to place, re-claiming ‘waste’ within circular economic frameworks, and inspiring agency and action within our communities, all within the context of The Showroom’s annual Mural Commission.

No previous stitching or printing experience necessary. Contribution to topics and collaborative work encouraged. Materials and refreshments will be provided.

Outcomes of this workshop include:

• Co-create a textile piece (textile ‘poster’ / banner / protest gear) that inspires action towards chosen themes
• Re-using material ‘waste’
• Shared multi-vocal, intergenerational collective wisdom to inspire and inform how to overcome challenges, eg. tools for how we can be more informed, compassionate and active citizens.
• Introduction to political education and human behaviour through lived experience.
• Inspire complex conversations, collaborative decision making, self reflection and action.
• Human connection amongst ever-changing environments and technologies
• Context of artistic practice, approaches and medium
• Empowering a sense of achievement (individual and collective)

Themes we can expand on led by group interest: 

• AI as a tool vs. hazard
• Impacts of Capitalism in relation to labour value
• Grieving communities and public spaces due to gentrification
• Dissemination of what is “policing” vs. community safeguarding
• What and who makes ‘community’?

About the sessions

Participants are encouraged to commit to attending all fortnightly sessions. The Showroom is dedicated to providing equal opportunities for all members of our community and can offer concessions. Please contact Rosy Leake at engagement@theshowroom.org if you are interested in taking part in the workshops but are unable to commit to the full 3 months or would like a concessionary booking.

About the artist

Kim Chin is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, facilitator, curator, and community organiser. Mediums include textiles, print-making (analogue + digital), participatory co-creation, and crafting conversations inclusive of embodied neurodifferent adaptations. Their practice explores objects, memory, “absence”, and intergenerational dissonance/joy as a site for transformation, self-discovery, and connection. Kim’s mission is to inspire agency and common ground attitudes through creative play.
