Agri-Tech Catalyst: innovation funding in developing countries

The Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) Agri-Food team are organising a free consortia-building workshop to promote Round 6 of the Agri-Tech Catalyst Competition, designed to help businesses and researchers develop innovative solutions to global challenges in the agricultural technology (‘Agri-Tech') sector.

The aim of this workshop is to enable potential applicants to get a better understanding of the competition process, rules and scope, and to facilitate networking and consortia building.

Agri-Tech Catalyst Round 6 competition detail

UK businesses and universities can apply for a share of £4 million to work with developing country partners on agri-tech innovations under the Round 6 of the Agri-Tech Catalyst Competition. The competition opens on 11 July 2016.

The aim of this competition is to increase the pace and scale of uptake of agricultural innovation by farmers in developing countries and to achieve:

• a sustained reduction of poverty and hunger for smallholder farmers
• a sustainable intensification in developing country agriculture
• improvements in human health and diversity in diets and nutrition
• a positive impact on rural income and food security
• opportunities for trade in agricultural products 

All projects must be collaborative and include both a UK and eligible developing country partner.

The projects are expected to range in size depending on the award category. Total project costs could be up to:

• £400,000 for early-stage technical feasibility studies
• £1.5 million for industrial research awards
• £800,000 for late-stage awards 

Projects should last between one year and 18 months for early and late-stage and up to 3 years for industrial research projects. 

Who should attend?

The workshop aims to attract:

• Technology providers, from any relevant sector. The Catalyst is designed to help take innovative ideas from any sector or discipline with the potential to benefit both the UK Agri-Tech industry and emerging markets, by tackling challenges in agriculture.
• Researchers Involved in primary agricultural production (both in commercial companies and research organisations) who could develop and/or be the “end users” of these technologies.
• Companies with international supply chains. The scheme provides an opportunity for any international organisation who rely on primary production in one of the target countries.
