Location

St Wilfrid's Church, Preston

Chapel Street Preston PR1 8BU United Kingdom

About this event

  • 4 hours 30 minutes

This event has been organised by the Northern Dioceses' Environment Group (NDEG).

Who is this event for?

NDEG invite parishes and individuals from across the North of England to come along to this day .

Come along if you want to

  • find out more about how our food supply system links to our faith
  • see what actions are being taken in Lancashire to create a more sustainable food supply system
  • Find out more about how poverty and food are linked
  • meet others from across the North of England want to live more sustainably and meet the challenges that Pope Francis set out in Laudato Si

What will happen?

Francis Stewart from the CAFOD Theology team will provide an initial reflection about food and faith.

Anna Clayton from Food Futures in Lancaster will show how local community based practical action can be part of a global movement calling for food system transformation, food sovereignty and food security.

Allison Light from Morecambe Bay Poverty Truth Commission will share food insecurity from the perspective of lived experience.

There will be a Fairtrade stall and a plant and seed-swap stall. If you have any excess seeds or seedlings then bring some along and swap them for something else! There will also be a stall about how microplastics are affecting our food.

What about food and drink?

Teas and coffees will be provided throughout the day. These will be available from 10:30 in the morning.

We invite everyone coming to bring some food to share with others at lunchtime (nothing that requires cooking or heating up) - a 'Jacob's Join'. Of course, dietary requirements may prevent some people from doing this, in which case please just bring some food for yourself.

How do I get there?

St Wilfred’s Parish Centre is a 5 min walk from Preston train station. There are good connections from Preston to cities across the North of England.

There is also ample open-air parking at the Fishergate shopping complex beside the train station. Avenham multi-storey Car Park (PR1 3XA) is cheaper (£5.50 all day) and easier to drive to if you are coming from the M6. The nearest (and dearest) car park is 2 mins away at St George’s Centre, accessed from Lune Street.

Who are the Northern Dioceses' Environment Group

The Northern Diocese Environment Group first met in 2017 to bring together people concerned about the environment and also active in their own dioceses. It was inspired by Pope Francis’s Laudato Si encyclical and created an opportunity to bring together people who care about creation, climate change and poverty. The objectives of the NDEG are:

· Solidarity – between enthusiastic practitioners who are active in the field

· Sharing – knowledge, experience and good practice

· Networking - emphasis on diocese, parish and schools

· Safe space – to raise concerns and find support

What do the Gospels tell us about how we live out our vocation as Christians in the 21st Century?

We raise awareness, promote discussion  and encourage action among Catholics throughout the Leeds diocese about the ‘Just’ Gospel response to the key social justice issues of today.

We base our work on the rich Social Teaching of the Catholic Church.
