About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

An opportunity to visit Horatio’s Garden South West for a private tour. Every Horatio’s Garden is created by a leading designer and rarely open to the public. This tour offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the restorative garden and learn more about its key design features and style, the benefits of horticultural therapy and the impact of gardens on wellbeing.

Horatio’s Garden South West was designed by Cleve West, seven-time RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner. Cleve has been designing award-winning gardens since 1990. From contemporary urban spaces to large country estates, he creates spaces that are both engaging and restful.

Horatio's Garden South West includes unique design features, like the apple archway of successional English varieties espaliered for easy picking from a wheelchair, with a long rill flowing alongside so the sound of water drifts across the garden.

Find out more about Horatio's Garden South West here.

Led by the Head Gardener Lucy Thorpe, you will have time to talk and learn about the charity, discover the incredible variety of plants and the individual design elements of the garden and time to enjoy the uplifting and vibrant space around you.

Hot beverages and homemade cake will be available and there will be a selection of fabulous plants and Horatio’s Garden merchandise on sale, if you wish to have a memento of your visit.

You will be gifted a plant list specific to the garden and a beautiful enamel Horatio’s Garden pin badge, so you can continue to show your support long after your visit.

The tour will begin at 10am and lasts 1.5 hours. We would advise you to arrive in good time to allow time for parking if you are driving and making your way to the garden.

In case of rain and adverse conditions; suitable clothing should be worn.

All profits from tickets purchased will go directly to the charity, to enable Horatio's Garden to continue to nurture lives after spinal injury.

Horatio’s Garden nurtures the wellbeing of people after spinal injury in beautiful, vibrant sanctuaries within the heart of NHS spinal injury centres. Leading designers create the accessible gardens where the charity’s team, alongside volunteers and creatives, care for people and plants alike.

Spinal cord injuries are traumatic events. The gardens are vital places for reflection and adjustment for people facing these life-changing injuries and long stays in hospital. The profoundly positive impact of a Horatio’s Garden is clear for patients, their loved ones and hospital staff. Research shows that 98% of beneficiaries see an improvement in their wellbeing with 88% reporting that the gardens have supported their mental and physical rehabilitation.

The charity’s vision is to sustainably grow thriving communities and biodiverse gardens in all 11 NHS spinal injury centres in the UK. To date we have opened six gardens in the Southwest, Scotland, Stoke Mandeville, Midlands, London & Southeast and Wales with our seventh garden under construction in Northern Ireland and our eighth planned to open in Sheffield in 2024.
