Investing in Skills for a Net Zero Future
The so-called ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ is now driving both the climate change and leveling up agenda, which in turn are bringing about a re-think of our approach towards the economic regeneration of older industrial areas. Familiar policy themes such as investment in infrastructure, R&D and skills will all need to be re-framed in the context of the net zero agenda.
However, it is the unlocking of new job opportunities and supporting the skills transition necessary to deliver decarbonisation that present the biggest challenges and opportunities for those areas still dealing with the aftermath of de-industrialization, such as the South Wales Valleys.
The Industrial Communities Alliance will be exploring how we can maximize these opportunities through investment in skills at a webinar to be held at 2.00pm on Friday 11th February 2022. Sharon James, Cardiff and the Vale College, will be leading the discussion and will draw on her contribution to the EU’s TRACER project which focuses on the transition of regions with a history of coal mining to a more sustainable energy future. Topics will include the potential for green jobs in emerging priority sectors and identifying and delivering future skills and qualifications for the new economy.
