Phantom Miniatures
An exploration of phantom words through strings and electronics, with solo preludes that welcome you into an evening of sonic illusions.
This free invite-only evening offers music that probes how we listen, leading to a premiere from Alexander Tillegreen; a new work for violin, cello, double bass and multichannel audio. The piece extends Alexander's research into the phantom word illusion, in which listeners hear words not present in the sound but generated by their own linguistic and psychological patterns. Spectral and microtonal writing intertwine with looping phantom-word recordings, creating textures in which language seems to appear and vanish differently for each listener. Live strings amplify these shifting illusions through overtone-rich gestures, polyrhythms, and blurred boundaries between recorded and real sound.
The evening opens with two multimedia performances by Riot soloists, sharpening the attention to timbre, space, and perceptual nuance. Together, the programme is an invitation into vivid, shape-shifting soundworlds that illuminate the unstable border between hearing and imagination.
Generously supported by The Space and the Danish Composers Society.
Programme:
Forbidden by Nina Whiteman (Sarah Dacey, soprano)
Xas-Orion by Michael Oliva (Philip Haworth, oboe)
Phantom Miniatures by Alexander Tillegreen (Marie Schreer, violin / Louise McMonagle, cello / Marianne Schofield, double bass)
Aaron Holloway-Nahum, sound
